Gynecology
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is one of the most common hormone conditions in women. Treatment is tailored to your symptoms and goals.
Common signs
- Irregular or missed periods
- Acne or excess facial and body hair
- Ovaries with many small follicles on ultrasound
- Difficulty getting pregnant
Diagnosis
PCOS is diagnosed from your history, exam, blood tests, and sometimes ultrasound, after ruling out other causes such as thyroid or prolactin problems.
Treatment
- Regulating periods and protecting the uterine lining, often with hormonal birth control
- Treating acne and hair growth
- Healthy-weight support and, when appropriate, medications such as metformin
- Fertility evaluation when you are trying to conceive
- Screening for diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure over time
